In a world filled with needs, the act of giving has become one of the greatest expressions of love. It’s not just about sharing what you have, but about letting God’s love flow through you to touch the lives of others. When we give, we mirror the heart of God, who gave us the greatest gift of all, His Son, Jesus Christ.
Giving is not always about money or material things. Sometimes, it’s your time, your prayers, your kind words, or a helping hand that someone needs the most. A smile to the weary, a listening ear to the burdened, or even a warm embrace to the lonely can go a long way in changing someone’s day and sometimes, their life.
Jesus reminds us in Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” When we give, we step into a blessing that money cannot buy. There’s a joy and peace that fills our hearts, knowing we’ve been used by God to make a difference.
But why do we struggle to give sometimes?
The truth is, giving requires faith. Faith that God will supply our needs even as we meet the needs of others. Faith that what we give, no matter how small, will be enough in God’s hands. Remember the story of the widow in 1 Kings 17? She had just a handful of flour and a little oil, yet she gave it to the prophet Elijah. God multiplied what she had, and she never ran out.
The beauty of giving is that it’s not about how much you give but the heart behind it. Jesus praised the poor widow who gave two small coins in the temple because she gave out of her lack, not her abundance (Mark 12:41-44). Her gift was small in man’s eyes, but huge in God’s.
The spirit of giving also teaches us humility. It reminds us that everything we have is a gift from God. We are merely stewards, entrusted with His blessings to share with others. Proverbs 11:25 says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
So, How Do We Cultivate The Spirit Of Giving?
- Pray for a giving heart: Ask God to fill you with His compassion and show you opportunities to give.
- Start where you are: You don’t have to wait until you have a lot. Start with what you have, a meal, clothes, or even your time.
- Trust God: Believe that He will provide for you as you provide for others.
In this Christmas season and beyond, let’s choose to give not out of obligation but out of love. Let’s give because God first gave to us. Let’s give because it’s what Jesus would do.
When you give, you’re not just helping someone, you’re sowing seeds of hope, love, and faith. And who knows? Your small act of kindness could be the answer to someone’s prayer.
Go out today and let the spirit of giving guide you. You’ll not only bless others but also find your own heart overflowing with joy.
Blessings to you!
