The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) has renewed its call for the U.S. government to continue supporting refugees and people living in poverty, both domestically and internationally. In a recently adopted resolution titled Compassion for a World in Need, the NAE emphasized the importance of responsible resource management while urging ongoing humanitarian aid.
A Call for Global Compassion
Recognizing the U.S.’s position as a global leader, the NAE urged policymakers to maintain funding for international assistance programs that support vulnerable communities. The resolution highlights that responsible stewardship of resources contributes to global stability and prosperity, which ultimately benefits the U.S. as well.
“As citizens of a country blessed with abundance and influence, we have a responsibility to use our resources wisely to help create a more peaceful and prosperous world,” the motion states.
The NAE also pointed to biblical teachings that support humanitarian efforts, referencing passages like Nehemiah 2:1–10, Ezra 1:1–8, and Luke 7:1–6 as examples of faith-driven public-private partnerships that helped those in need.
Faith-Based Organizations and Government Collaboration
The NAE reaffirmed its belief that faith-based organizations play a critical role in humanitarian efforts. It cited Supreme Court rulings that uphold the inclusion of these organizations in public aid programs. The association also reminded Christians of the biblical principle that “from everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded” (Luke 12:48), encouraging generosity and service.
Rev. Dr. Walter Kim, president of the NAE, highlighted the significant impact of faith-based and government initiatives. “Millions of lives have been saved, and communities have flourished because of these combined efforts,” he said. “While every administration has the right to evaluate aid programs, reforms should be thoughtful and not disrupt programs that are working well.”
Encouraging Evangelicals to Take Action
The NAE is calling on evangelicals to actively support humanitarian efforts through prayer, financial contributions, and advocacy. The organization urges Christians to welcome and befriend immigrants and refugees, demonstrating Christ’s love in their communities.
Additionally, the NAE has asked its members to encourage policymakers to restore international aid programs that have recently been paused. The request comes after recent executive orders affected funding for initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty and supporting refugees worldwide.
Concerns Over Foreign Aid Changes
Evangelical leaders, including Galen Carey, NAE vice president of government relations, have expressed concerns about recent disruptions to foreign aid programs. While acknowledging the need for periodic evaluations, Carey emphasized the importance of maintaining effective programs that provide critical support to people in need.
“We agree that foreign aid programs should be reviewed and improved where necessary,” Carey said. “However, these evaluations should not lead to the abrupt cancellation of successful initiatives that save lives and promote global stability.”
Carey reiterated that while the U.S. cannot solve all global issues, its aid programs play a vital role in addressing crises such as war, poverty, and disease.
Balancing Aid with National Interests
The NAE’s resolution encourages policymakers to assess foreign aid programs for their effectiveness and alignment with American values while ensuring that ongoing humanitarian efforts are not hindered. The organization also called for clear communication from the government to help Americans understand the benefits of continued international engagement and leadership in humanitarian efforts.
A Commitment to Gospel Values
As part of their call to action, evangelical leaders reaffirmed their commitment to upholding biblical values in global outreach. Rev. Kim reminded Christians of their responsibility to care for the most vulnerable, citing Jesus’ command to spread the gospel through both word and action.
“For two thousand years, Christians have responded to Jesus’ call to make disciples of all nations, demonstrating love and compassion for those in need,” Kim said. “We recognize that suffering will always exist in this world, but this reality should motivate us to give even more generously and serve with greater dedication.”
The NAE concluded its statement with a passage from 2 Corinthians 9:6–8, encouraging believers to give freely and joyfully, trusting that God will provide abundantly for every good work.
Final Thoughts
The NAE’s renewed call for compassion reminds evangelicals of their biblical mandate to help those in need. Whether through prayer, giving, or advocacy, Christians are encouraged to be a light in the world, ensuring that humanitarian aid continues to reach those who need it most.
