Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and a two-time Pro Bowl selection, recently shared his personal journey of faith, revealing how he had to hit “rock bottom” before fully embracing Jesus Christ. Now, he aims to inspire the next generation of athletes by sharing the lessons he has learned along the way.
A Journey of Faith
In a candid conversation on The Sports Spectrum Podcast, the 29-year-old quarterback reflected on his upbringing and early encounters with faith. As a child, Mayfield rarely attended church, only engaging with Christianity during Christmas and Easter. His initial understanding of faith was simple: being a good person and doing good deeds.
However, his perspective began to shift during his college years in Oklahoma. There, he met Pastor Adam Starling, who helped him realize that faith isn’t about being perfect or having everything figured out. One of the key lessons Mayfield learned from Starling was the concept that “we’re all born sinners, and we’ve been saved.” Even with this new understanding, it took years before he fully embraced his faith.
Finding Purpose Beyond Football
Mayfield’s faith deepened after he joined Professional Athletes Outreach with his wife in February 2020 while playing for the Cleveland Browns. He described this experience as a revelation, saying, “This is what we’ve been looking for.”
At the time, he was struggling with a sense of emptiness. Football had become his identity, but success on the field wasn’t enough to fulfill him. It wasn’t until his career took a downturn, losing his starting position with the Browns in 2022 and moving between teams, that he truly understood the lesson God was teaching him.
“God had to take my career down to the studs and make me realize that I’m more than a football player,” Mayfield shared. “For me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom.”
Challenges in Marriage and Personal Growth
Mayfield’s struggles weren’t limited to football. He revealed that his marriage to Emily Wilkinson faced significant challenges, particularly as they dealt with difficulties in starting a family.
“We weren’t doing well at all,” he admitted. “For me to climb back up, I had to dive into the Word and accept grace, and that was really, really hard for me.”
However, through faith, their relationship grew stronger. Mayfield credited his wife’s unwavering faith during tough times, saying, “God had her back the whole time, kept her strong through a lot of trials and tribulations. I’ve fallen more in love with her because I’ve seen her faith grow and how strong she’s been for me when I wasn’t able to be strong.”
Faith as a Daily Commitment
Mayfield acknowledged that maintaining a strong faith requires continuous effort. “The enemy is out to get you,” he said. “I thought that once I achieved something, I could just move on, but faith has to be part of the daily routine. Your priorities have to align with that.”
Since joining the Buccaneers, he has not only revived his football career but has also built a stronger foundation for his faith. He describes Tampa as feeling “like home,” attributing this to the spiritual growth he has experienced.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Mayfield now hopes to use his journey to guide younger athletes. “I want to use the lessons I’ve learned, the ups and downs of trying to make it happen my own way and being humbled, to help others,” he said. “Faith in Jesus is the only thing that made me feel whole.”
Ultimately, Mayfield sees his role as more than just an athlete. “It’s not about the stats or anything on the field,” he explained. “It’s about how I carry myself, how I inspire others, and how I create a culture where people can be the best version of themselves.”
For Mayfield, his story is one of redemption, faith, and purpose, a testament to how hitting rock bottom can lead to a deeper understanding of God’s grace.
