Assistant Divisional Officer 1 (A.D.O. 1) Christiana Sarkodie, an experienced fire service officer, has raised concerns about the increasing number of fire outbreaks in Ghana. Speaking on Philfree Radio’s Gospel-Driven morning show Daily Dew, hosted by the Bondservant of Christ Nana Antwi in Accra, she emphasized the urgent need for fire safety awareness and precautions.
A.D.O. 1 Sarkodie highlighted that while LPG (gas) is an essential and convenient part of many households, it is also highly volatile and must be handled with care. She urged the public to follow fire safety guidelines to help prevent fires and minimize damage to lives and property.
Discussing the rising cases of fire outbreaks in the country, especially those caused by open flames and gas-related incidents, she stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to fire safety. This, she said, should involve government initiatives, community-led efforts, private sector partnerships, technological innovations, and international cooperation. By implementing these strategies, Ghana can effectively address fire safety challenges and reduce the risk of devastating fires.
Important Fire Safety Tips
A.D.O. 1 Sarkodie shared practical safety tips, particularly regarding gas cylinder usage. She emphasized the importance of keeping gas cylinders in well-ventilated areas, preferably outside the home.
1. Let the Gas Cylinder Settle
“After filling your gas cylinder, allow it to sit for at least 10-15 minutes before using it,” she advised. “Think of it like letting minerals settle – the initial foam needs time to stabilize. Using the gas immediately can lead to dangerous explosions.”
2. Avoid Overfilling Gas Cylinders
She warned against filling gas cylinders to the brim. “Always leave some space for the gas to expand,” she stated. Overfilled cylinders are more likely to leak or explode under pressure.
3. Regular Cylinder Maintenance
A.D.O. 1 Sarkodie stressed the importance of checking the rubber regulator inside the cylinder. “This small component is crucial for safety,” she explained. “If the gas filling station staff recommend replacing it, don’t hesitate. A leaking regulator is a ticking time bomb.”
4. Do Not Use Makeshift Supports for Leaking Cylinders
She cautioned against using stones or other makeshift objects to stabilize a leaking cylinder, stating that such practices are unreliable and highly dangerous.
5. Respect the Expiry Date of Gas Cylinders
Finally, she urged Ghanaians to pay attention to the expiry dates on gas cylinders. “Don’t be tempted to repaint an old cylinder to make it look new,” she warned. “A cylinder past its expiry date is weakened and poses a serious fire hazard.”
A.D.O. 1 Sarkodie shared many other fire safety precautions and preventive measures.
