“Zion said, ‘The Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me.’ Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands; your walls are ever before Me.” (Isaiah 49:14-16).
How many times, in the middle of life’s challenges, have you felt like God has forgotten about you? In this passage, God speaks directly to those feelings, offering comfort and reassurance of His unfailing care and love.
A Love Deeper Than a Mother’s
God asks, “Can a woman forget her nursing child?” A nursing child is helpless, completely dependent on its mother for everything. It’s hard to imagine a mother forgetting or neglecting her infant. Yet even if such a thing were possible, God says, “I will never forget you.”
This is a powerful reminder that His love goes far beyond even the most tender human relationships. He says elsewhere, “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, my unfailing love for you will not be shaken” (Isaiah 54:10).
If you feel forgotten or abandoned, remember this: God’s love for you is constant, unshaken by time, trials, or anything in this world.
Engraved on His Hands
God says, “I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.” Think about that. When something is engraved, it is permanent, not easily erased or forgotten. Engraving on the hand is significant because it’s always visible.
This is how much you matter to God. Your name isn’t written in pencil, ready to be erased. It’s carved into the hands of your Creator, a symbol of His eternal love and commitment to you. And think about the hands of Jesus, pierced for our sins. Those scars are a constant reminder of the price He paid because He loves us so deeply.
Walls of Protection
The Lord also says, “Your walls are ever before Me.” A wall represents protection and safety. God promises to be a wall of fire around you (Zechariah 2:5). This means He not only shields you from harm but also actively watches over that protection, ensuring no enemy can break through.
Even when life feels chaotic, God is guarding you. No weapon formed against you can prosper when you are surrounded by His divine wall of fire.
Cast Your Cares on Him
Knowing that God cares for you so deeply, why carry your burdens alone? Scripture reminds us, “Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Trust in His love, His protection, and His provision.
As Archbishop Leighton said, “If the Lord cares for you, be at rest.” You can rest because He is watching over you, guiding you, and holding you in His hands.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your unfailing love and care. Help me to trust in Your protection and cast all my burdens on You. Remind me daily that I am engraved on Your hands and surrounded by Your love. Amen.
