Abraham, the father of faith, was the first to leave behind the good things in his life for the sake of God. It’s a powerful example, especially today, when so many of us struggle to give up even the bad things in our lives, let alone the good ones.
Why Did God Ask Abraham to Leave?
God told Abraham to leave his country, his relatives, and his father’s house, not to deprive him, but to bless him with something far greater. “The Lord never asks us to leave anything, nor does He take anything away from us unless He has something better in store.”
Think about it: even the best that we have cannot compare to the least of what God offers us.
Abraham’s Reward for Obedience
When Abraham obeyed and left behind his “good things,” God blessed him with Canaan, the best of His promises. Contrast this with Lot, who was also given the chance to choose God’s best. When commanded to “escape to the mountain” (Genesis 19:17), Lot hesitated and ultimately lost out. But Abraham embraced the call, went to the mountain, and worshiped the Lord (Genesis 12:8).
Years later, when God asked Abraham to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac on Mount Moriah, Abraham didn’t hesitate. Even in his old age, he climbed the mountain and prepared to give his best to God, fully trusting that God’s plan was greater than his own.
What About You?
Are you holding onto things that seem “good,” but God is asking you to let go of? It could be comfort, relationships, habits, or even plans that you’ve made. Trust that when God asks you to release something, He has something far better in store.
A Call to Surrender
Child of God, don’t be reluctant to part with the “good things” that the Lord may be asking you to lay down. When you trust Him, you’ll find that His plans for you exceed anything you could imagine.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to trust You completely. Give me the faith and courage to let go of anything You ask me to surrender. I know that Your plans for me are far greater than anything I could hold onto. Amen.
When you release the “good,” God is ready to bless you with His best!
