Peter was one of Jesus’ closest disciples, but he wasn’t perfect. In fact, he was often the first to mess up. He even had the audacity to rebuke Jesus Himself! “Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him…” (Matthew 16:22).
Peter also struggled with staying alert. At the Garden of Gethsemane, during one of Jesus’ most agonizing moments, Peter and the other disciples couldn’t stay awake to pray. Jesus specifically called him out, saying, “Couldn’t you watch with Me for one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). Even during the incredible event of the Transfiguration, when Moses and Elijah appeared in glory with Jesus, Peter was sleeping again! (Luke 9:32).
A Life Transformed
But something amazing happened. On the day of Pentecost, Peter was no longer the impulsive, timid man we see in the Gospels. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter became a bold and powerful preacher. On that very day, through his words, three thousand people were saved and baptized. These were no casual commitments, they continued faithfully in teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42).
The same Peter who had once been afraid of suffering became someone who could encourage others to rejoice in trials. He wrote, “Rejoice, inasmuch as you are partakers of Christ’s sufferings…” (1 Peter 4:13). Church history even tells us that Peter died as a martyr, crucified for his faith.
